Tips for subject lines for better email open rates
Disclaimer for this info: It changes all the time. So if you’re reading this months later, it may not be as useful anymore. Then again, trends tend to come back, so if you’re reading this in a few years, let me know if any of these are helping again.
Don’t sleep on your subject lines. They’re powerful way to get attention to your email, and free. I highly recommend A/B testing to find what works best for you, because each industry, organization, and audience will have different insights.
Here are a few things that overall, we’re seeing are helping to increase open rates, from Jay Schwedelson (a fantastic email marketer). Try them out now:
Put the {{company}} name in the subject line, not the person’s {{firstname}}
e.g. Why Acme’s competitors are crushing it
Capitalize one word in the middle of the subject line text
e.g. Brand NEW and hot
Use just one word
e.g. Hi
You can help with the LA recovery
It’s horrible seeing what’s happened in LA. If you’re someone affected, I’m sorry. Know that we’re thinking of you.
For those of us who are on the outside, there are several places to donate to recovery efforts. The Wildire Recovery Fund is one that’s maintained a positive reputation, and has been actively involved in long-term recovery efforts, including rebuilding homes, providing mental health support, and strengthening emergency response systems. So if you donate, you know you’ll be helping people who need it.
Thanks, friends. I’ve been too sick for more. The dangers of a toddler in daycare.
Or maybe the dangers of my cooking. Jury’s still out.
Best,
Nikki
